"Where are you?"

This is what the LORD God asked Adam after he had eaten from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden. Adam and his wife heard God coming in the cool of the day, and they hid themselves from the presence of the LORD among the trees in the garden of Eden. If you remember the account, then you know that they were wearing fig leaves to cover themselves because they came to realize that they were not just naked, but also ashamed.

Why were they hiding? It is because they knew they disobeyed God's commandment:

"Of every tree of the garden you may freely eat; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die" (Genesis 2:16-17).

What was the LORD God really asking Adam? Surely, He knew where Adam and his wife were. The truth about ourselves is that we indulge our carnal desires, even when we know the consequences of disobedience. We gravitate toward life's forbidden fruit; and in our hearts we may know all along that we are wrong, but we do it anyway.

In the case of Adam and Eve, they ate the forbidden fruit of the tree; and rather than seeking God to tell Him and seek forgiveness, they hid when they heard Him coming to meet with them. But God pursued them and held them accountable. They had died spiritually, and they were told that they would eventually die physically as well. He replaced their coverings of fig leaves with tunics of animal skin. Do you know why?

Our God pursues us, too. Do you know what He did for you and why? This is more important than anything that is going on in your life right now. Perhaps today is the day the Lord will bring change not just to your life, but also to your eternal destiny.

Where are you?
